Dear Supporters, Advocates, and Community Members,
It is with a heavy heart that we write to inform you that Adoption Mosaic will be closing its doors after 10 great years of serving the adoption community. This was an extremely difficult decision, but the current Board and Astrid, our Executive Director, deliberated, reached a consensus, and are at peace that this is the most honorable and respectful transition for the organization.
We want to thank you for the ongoing support you have provided throughout the years. What a joy and honor it has been to serve this community! We know we have reached hundreds of people — adoptees, adoptive and prospective adoptive parents, first parents, family members, and friends — through our message of inclusion, acceptance, and diversity. We are proud that we embraced all with open arms and stood by our mission through thick and thin. From operating out of Astrid’s attic, to moving into a full-fledged office in SE Uplift and recruiting volunteers, facilitating Adoption Information Day, hosting silent auctions, and putting on a 5/10K race for all families to enjoy, Adoption Mosaic’s journey has been rich in relationships and experiences.
Executive Director Astrid Castro is moving on to a fantastic new opportunity and building her adoption consulting practice. Her last day with Adoption Mosaic will be August 31st, at which time she’ll be launching her private practice. She welcomes the opportunity to maintain contact with everyone in the adoption community. You can reach her at:
We also provided adoption-related resources that Astrid compiled on our website,
Our official last day as a nonprofit organization will be Wednesday, September 30th.
Again, thank you for your support. Ultimately, the financial burden of keeping the nonprofit’s doors open became too much for the organization to bear, but we’re moving on with a sense of hope and joy for Astrid’s transition. We know that with each close of a chapter, an exciting new beginning awaits.

Join a Free Community Writing Workshop
In this workshop, facilitators will write alongside participants through a series of freewrites and will give positive, strength-building feedback. Workshop participants write stories, poems, memoirs, letters, essays while experimenting with imagery, character development, writing in different voices, dialogue and early-draft revision. Participants also have the opportunity to share their writing and give and receive positive feedback to grow as writers and build respectful community.
Participants strengthen their writing along with their sense of community. While not a traditional class, this workshop is educational, helping individuals deepen their writing, reading, listening and communication skills. Although it is not a counseling or support group, participants tell us that the process is therapeutic, healing and reduces their sense of isolation. Write Around Portland has inspired participants to complete their GEDs, attend college, stick with treatment programs, transition back to our community after incarceration and break cycles of abuse.
Writing journals, pens and light snacks provided.
